Goethe discourages teaching?

In the upper right corner of the web page of the Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany, there is a weekly? daily? changing quote of – guess who? – Goethe, the poet and polymath (wow, I continue to learn from wikipedia). I have sometimes wondered about who picks those quotes. Today, obviously someone with not too much trust in the university’s competence: “Lehre tut viel, aber Aufmunterung tut alles” translates into “Teaching does a lot, but encouragement does all”. However, that should not really come as a surprise, since the Goethe-University once had the slogan “Here Knowledge becomes Reality”. Where knowledge becomes reality, teaching isn’t really necessary, obviously.
